Pregnancy: Symptoms and Care

Not sure if you are pregnant? Don’t worry there are always a few tell-tale signs that can make things clearer for you. It is important to bear in mind that pregnancy signs can be different for every pregnant woman. Moreover, there is a good chance that the symptoms are caused by some other medical condition and not because you are pregnant.

Some women may experience pregnancy symptoms during the first few days of conception while others may not experience any for weeks. So, the only surefire way to confirm your pregnancy is by taking a pregnancy test.

  1. Delayed or Missed Period: The most common early pregnancy sign is a missed or delayed period. In case you miss your period and there is a likelihood of pregnancy, you may like to take a pregnancy test to ascertain whether you are pregnant or not.
  2. Nausea: Nausea or morning sickness is another popular pregnancy symptom. Nausea classically occurs within the first few weeks of conception. A pregnant woman can in fact experience nausea any time of the day but usually, it happens in the morning. Some women may also develop strong cravings or aversions to certain foods or smells.
  3. Changes in Breasts: The breasts of a pregnant woman are likely to become sore or swollen within a week or so of conception. They may also tend to become fuller or heavier. The area surrounding the nipples called the areola may also start to darken.
  4. Implantation bleeding and Cramping: Some women after conception may experience a little spotting when the fertilized egg gets attached to the uterus wall. This is called implantation bleeding. Occasionally, some women can also experience cramping which may feel like menstrual cramps. However, most women may not have implantation bleeding. So, you may still be pregnant even if you don’t experience this particular symptom.
  5. Fatigue: A woman, when pregnant, may feel unusually tired and drained from the early days of pregnancy. This is quite normal and may be attributed to the fluctuating pregnancy hormones. 

Most of the pregnancy discomfort and symptoms can be tackled with proper pregnancy care. Some of the tips that may be kept in mind to ensure a smooth pregnancy are as follows:

  • Adequate rest and sleep are essential to combat pregnancy induced fatigue.
  • Eating a healthy and balanced diet can ensure the regular supply of essential nutrients for the growing baby and the mother.
  • It is important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking sufficient amounts of water during pregnancy.
  • Aches and pains experienced during pregnancy can be eased out by maintaining proper standing and sitting postures and by staying active with walks and simple workouts.
  • Meditation and breathing techniques can greatly help in relaxing and reducing stress caused during pregnancy.
